1979年陳秋霞灌錄由鄭國江作詞的粵語版反毒歌曲〈罌粟花〉，同年旋即又推出旋律相同但由邱晨填詞的華語版〈往事〉，兩個版本均標明作曲者為陳秋霞。其實該曲的旋律與瓊拜耶茲(Joan Baez)或巴布迪倫(Bob Dylan)演唱的改編民謠〈木匠〉(House Carpenter)有九成相近，幾乎一模一樣。
原來這首歌是瓊拜耶茲取材自法蘭西斯詹姆士查爾德(Francis James Child)所編纂的《英國及蘇格蘭流行歌謠》(The English and Scottish Popular Ballad)一書中的第243首〈詹姆士哈里斯-魔鬼之愛〉(James Harris - The Daemon Love)，該書一共搜羅了305首歌謠。瓊拜耶茲節錄改編了歌詞，至於曲子則標示為傳統歌謠，但是至今未找到和瓊拜耶茲(Joan Baez)或巴布迪倫(Bob Dylan)演唱的〈木匠〉旋律相近的傳統歌謠。也許是瓊拜耶茲把歌曲做了些潤飾，讓旋律更為悅耳。

此曲源於16世紀，由倫敦的一位歌謠創作者勞倫斯普萊士(Laurence Price)於1657年所寫，歌曲靈感來自於於朴里茅斯(Plymouth)一位鄉村女郎珍妮蕾納絲(Jane Renalds)的真實驚悚的三角戀情。
經過不斷傳唱演進，歌詞及旋律變異甚大，版本眾多。就連歌名也不同：諸如〈詹姆士哈里斯〉(James Harris)、〈魔鬼之愛〉(The Daemon Love)、〈木匠〉(House Carpenter)，以下諸多版本您可自行比較。
Daemon這個字出自希臘神話故事，是個半神半人，身為神與人之間的信差。後來變成神祇或人類之敵人，成為帶來疾病等災厄的「邪惡精靈」、「惡靈」。Daemon和demon發音一樣，是個會誘惑、折磨、綁架人類、十足可怕的魔鬼。歌曲中的女主角禁不住魔鬼的誘惑，終至家破人亡。
